Fortunately, Lucknow, a small village on the Mitchell Highway just a few kilometers from Orange had a ‘gold strike’ shortly after the Ophir find and it continued on for over 100 years.
When you visit you will still see remains of the Wentworth Gold Mine workings
(1890s – 1940s) – extensive above ground buildings from the mining era still exist.
Lucknow is much as it was in the beginning – a great journey back in time. In the village there are still many examples of the miner’s cottages.
You can take a ‘Walking Tour of Lucknow’ and stroll around the historic village. With its rich heritage as a gold mining settlement dating back to the 1850s you can discover some of Australia’s early history.
On your walk you will see mounds of sand in the distance – these are left over from the gold extraction process.
