When you visit Kiandra to stay, bushwalk, fish, ski, or tour the Snowy Mountains Highway you’re stepping into history.
Kiandra is a historic site located in the sub-Alpine zone within Kosciuszko National Park , New South Wales. In 1860 it was the site of a short lived but frenetic gold rush and it was during this gold rush that skiing started in Australia. From the gold rush the mountain township of Kiandra was born.
Prior to the rush and before graziers started bringing cattle to the mountains in the summer months, Kiandra was the home of the Aboriginal Wolgalu people.
After years of boom and bust Kiandra today is an evocative, beautiful, and much loved mountain place steeped in history and well placed for adventure.
Kiandra’s mountain streams and rivers offer some of the best trout fishing in mainland Australia, the scenic and the winding roads leading to and from it are perfect for motorcyclists, and it is located only minutes from Mt Selwyn Ski resort. Kiandra is surrounded with medium distance walking routes and the long distance Australian Alps Walking Track from Victoria to Canberra passes straight through it.
