Lucknow was the town that arose on the Wentworth estate – a privately owned tract of land just to the south east of Orange that happened to be very rich in gold.

These same golden riches are today at the heart of one of Australia’s largest gold mining operations just across the ridgeline at Cadia Valley.

Mining at Lucknow extended from the very outset of the NSW gold rush in 1851 through well into the 20th century.

Today you can easily appreicate Lucknow’s golden heritage thanks to its ready access alongside the major highway into Orange.

Stroll around the site and see the relics of the recent modern mining operations on site, and let the photographs taken in the mid 1870s help you imagine how the setting would have looked in the later part of the 1800s.

Take advantage of a short break in Orange to also visit other goldfields icons including Ophir just a short drive away to the north. Classic gold country indeed!
