Wee Jasper Nature & Outdoors

Thought to be named after tiny green gemstones found by an early Scots resident which he called ‘Wee Jaspers’ this is a natural wonderland made 400 million years ago for exploring, camping, picnicking, bird-watching and outdoors enjoyment.

When you take in the landscape around Wee Jasper, it’s not hard to imagine the prehistoric days when megafauna such as giant kangaroos and wombat-like creatures roamed the hills. Fossil viewing abounds as part of specialist tours with expert guides. Careys Cave offers one of Australia’s most memorable natural experiences while properly equipped adventurers can discover a myriad of other wild limestone cave systems.

Wee Jasper is a camping and RV paradise with five beautiful camping reserves and many spectacular places to stop. Bushwalking along the river or on parts of the Hume and Hovell Walking Track from the Fitzpatrick Trackhead allows immersion in nature and encounters with locals – some 56 species of birds and many readily-spotted mammals and reptiles.

The river allows fishing, boating, canoeing and li-loing and careful summer swimming and is the scene of an epic crossing by Hume’s party in 1824 when a cart was converted to a makeshift barge to cross raging floodwaters near the present site of the Taemas Bridge.

The roads you travel were once rough tracks tramped by thousands making their way to the Kiandra goldfields.
