Hamilton Hume’s Grave Heritage

How much do you know about Hamilton Hume, apart from his famous Highway?

About

Hamilton Hume (1797-1873) was born at Toongabbie, near Parramatta on 19 June, 1797. Hume was a superior bushman and prominent Australian explorer.

He led the first Europeans to the Yass plains in 1821. Hume was a leader in The Hume and Hovell expedition – Lake George to Melbourne in 1824 and occupied the land grant of Yass in 1828.

He eventually died at his home, ‘Cooma Cottage‘ on 19 April, 1873.

The original headstone was replaced in 1879 on instructions from his wife Elizabeth. This is located in the Anglican section of the cemetery. The new signs direct visitors to the site, where his wife also lays beside him.
