About

George Street sprang up during the gold rush of 1866 in Grenfell. Tents and shacks formed a double row guided by the banks of Emu Creek and formed the original business centre of the town. This road was very narrow and crooked and when government surveyors arrived they instantly determined the street would not suffice as the main street for a bustling town. They went ahead and surveyed Main Street and after number of disastrous fires in the 1880’s most businesses started to transition away from George Street and into Main Street.
